The 2011 Outstanding Volunteer Award was awarded posthumously to 4-year volunteer Gene Cashat, who lost his battle with cancer just days after his selection was announced. Gene was highly regarded by his colleagues as a warm and caring individual who wasn’t afraid to take on tricky cases, such as one involving ten siblings. Over Gene’s four years with Child Advocates, he helped 37 children find a healthy environment to thrive in. Gene was also noted for his dedication to helping parents complete their family plans and regain custody. Brandon Drake, an Advocacy Coordinator who worked with Gene, remembers Gene saying that his work with the children helped get him through the pain of his cancer treatments.
Gene Cashat was our Outstanding Volunteer of the Year in 2011.
