Angels of Hope Luncheon to Showcase FENDI

The staple event for Houston’s fashion-conscious philanthropists each Fall, the Friends of Child Advocates’ Angels of Hope Luncheon and Fashion Presentation by Neiman Marcus is just around the corner. The Host Committee is now forming for the luncheon – taking place Monday, December 8 at the Westin Galleria Grand Ballroom – and tables are already selling.

Event chairs Anita O’Shaughnessy and Cathy Fitzpatrick Cleary are thrilled to announce the event honoree – their longtime friend and Child Advocates loyalist, Nancy Thorington – and featured designer – FENDI. The event will feature the fashion house’s 2009 Spring Ready-to-Wear Collection on the runway.

OUR HONOREE: Nancy Thorington
After receiving her undergraduate degree in Finance from the University of Illinois and her MBA from the University of Texas, Nancy Thorington worked in commercial real estate banking with InterFirst Corporation and Chase Manhattan Bank.

A volunteer dedicated to the betterment of our community, Nancy is active with several causes focusing on the promotion of adult literacy and the prevention of child abuse. She served four years as a tutor and board member with Literacy Advance, a not-for-profit agency that trains volunteers to become literacy tutors for both English- and non-English-speaking adults.

When her son entered first grade, Nancy sought a more involved volunteer role with children. She found Child Advocates, Inc. and, in 1996, became a court-appointed advocate volunteer, and was named the organization's 2000 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year. Becoming more involved in the organization, Nancy joined the Advisory Board, chaired the Santa’s Wish List and Holiday Party for two years each and actively supported the Angels of Hope Luncheon, Pull for Kids Classic and other fundraisers. In 2004, she retired from case work to increase her committee work with Child Advocates and to become a member of the Board of Directors. Nancy joined the Friends of Child Advocates soon after, eventually serving two years as president, and then becoming part of the Development Committee. In 2006, she was elected Board of Directors Chair for Child Advocates - a position in which she served two consecutive years.

Nancy is currently active on the Nominating Committee of the Child Advocates, Inc. Board of Directors and volunteers with Episcopal High School, from which her son graduated in 2008.

OUR FEATURED DESIGNER: FENDI
FENDI began in 1918 when Adele Casagrande opened a leather and fur shop in central Rome. When Adele married Edoardo FENDI in 1925, they made a decision to change the name to FENDI and the business prospered. In 1962, the FENDIs signed on German designer Karl Lagerfeld – widely recognized as one of the most influential fashion designers of the late 20th century – who has also collaborated with couture labels Chanel and Chloé.

Lagerfeld created the inverted FF logo that joined the growing list of international status symbols, appearing on products from handbags and shoes to luggage and apparel. Kanye West recently appeared at a party with the iconic logo shaved into his head.

In 1970, FENDI presented its first ready-to-wear line after they were unable to find quality clothes to show under their fur collection. The family sold the brand in 1999 for an estimated $850 million and the network continues to expand with more than 120 boutiques worldwide.
