BARBARA SPRINGER

Court Appointed Advocate since
: 2005

How did you decide to become a Child Advocate volunteer? A friend and co-worker, Quinton Harp, had been involved with Child Advocates for several years and always spoke highly of the organization and the work he did as a Guardian ad litem. After being retired for a few months, I decided to go to an orientation meeting for Child Advocates and the rest is history! I have worked with several non-profits since I retired and have found Child Advocates to be extremely well run, very professional with outstanding people. All of my coordinators have been outstanding:  Jessica Gottschalk, Julie Hennington, Maria Cano and Johnte Harris! Training and development for their volunteers is Child Advocates' priority! They are very appreciative of the work we do.

Your most memorable experience as a court appointed advocate ...the look on the children's faces when they greet me! Definitely proof of the important role I play in their lives!

What is your life like outside of volunteering with Child Advocates? I have been retired from BP since 2005. I have a wonderful husband and 3 terrific grandchildren. I have been taking painting, drawing and art history classes at Glassell School of Art for several years. I also stay busy helping people write their resumes as a part time consulting job.

Tips you’d give to people who are interested in volunteering for Child Advocates, but haven’t yet made the commitment. Go for it! Don't hesitate out of apprehension. There are wonderful people at Child Advocates who will be supportive and help you through all and any problems or issues that arise! There is always someone you can call day or night. The look on the kids' faces and the impact you can have on their lives make the commitment all worthwhile!
