About Child Advocates

Child Advocates trains everyday people to advocate for the best interests of children in foster care so they can find safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible. In Houston alone, there are over 2,000 kids in foster care on any given day that have been removed from their homes because of life-threatening abuse or neglect.

Child Advocates was founded in 1984 and serves as Harris County’s court appointed special advocate (CASA) program. CASA was originally founded in 1977 in Seattle by Judge David Soukup who was concerned with how quickly decisions were being made about where abused and neglected children should live. He decided to appoint volunteers from the community to work on behalf of these children – gathering important facts to share in court so that judges can make well-informed decisions and that children end up in safe, stable homes. The CASA model has spread across the country with over 700 programs nationwide.

Child Advocates' vision is to provide an advocate for every abused and neglected child in Harris County who needs one. With the help of caring advocates, the cycle of abuse and neglect can be broken. Our challenge is to find the volunteers, resources, commitment and compassion that will get us there.
